Before you can move forward with dental implants, you will first need to meet with Dr. James A. Vito. During this consultation, your oral health will be carefully examined and Dr. Vito will discuss with you whether you or a conventional dental implant therapy candidate or advanced dental implant therapy candidate where bone grafts and/or soft tissue grafting will need to be performed prior to dentla implant placement..
There are certain factors that Dr. James A. Vito looks at when determining a patient’s dental implant candidacy:
Patients with the following traits may require supplemental procedures before they can receive the dental implants:
Some patients will not qualify for dental implants after their first consultation. That doesn’t mean that these patients will never be able to have implants placed, but a supplemental procedure can be applied before they qualify.
The jawbone requires constant stimulation in order to retain health and tissue density. This stimulation comes from chewing and speaking. When you lose a tooth, the jawbone fails to get this needed exercise and begins to deteriorate as a result.
For these patients, we can use a supplemental procedure called bone grafting to reverse the damage. Bone grafting is a procedure that takes donated bone tissue and grafts it to the deficient areas of the jawbone. Using the same regenerative process that allows osseointegration to succeed, this new bone tissue is absorbed and the jawbone healed.
It is important that our patients not hesitate to restore their deteriorating jawbones. The reason for this is that jawbone deterioration can have many negative effects on the patient, particularly in their facial structure. As the jawbone deteriorates, patients begin to experience sunken cheeks and premature wrinkling. These effects can make the patient appear aged or unhealthy.
When your gum tissue begins to pull or shrink away from your teeth, it results in a condition called gum recession. This can happen for a variety of different reasons, the most common of which are:
For treating our patients with gum recession, we use a procedure called soft tissue augmentation. This treatment takes gum tissue from the patient’s palate and grafts it to the receded areas around the patient’s tooth roots. In addition to restoring implant candidacy, soft tissue augmentation can decrease sensitivity in your teeth and give your smile a more youthful look.
